Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of National Honor Society?

Why should I apply for membership?

Established in 1921, the National Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students who demonstrate the highest standards of character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, US territories, Canada, and around the world. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service (National Website: https://www.nhs.us/about/). Membership in National Honor Society also provides an opportunity to make new friends and work with peers in service to the community.

What are the eligibility requirements for NHS membership?

Applicants for membership in the Chantilly High School Chapter of National Honor Society should demonstrate excellence in the following areas:

  • Character: The student of good character demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and has an upstanding disciplinary record.

  • Scholarship: Per national guidelines, at a minimum, students must have a 3.5 GPA. This GPA must be maintained during time of membership.

  • Service: Service involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation.

  • Leadership: Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Students who meet the scholarship requirement will have an opportunity to complete an application demonstrating their commitment to service, leadership, and character.

How do I apply for membership?

Invitations to join the CHS Chapter of National Honor Society will be distributed to eligible students shortly after the end of first quarter. In addition to the formal application, a teacher recommendation is required. Applications will be judged based upon the four pillars of NHS: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.

What are the responsibilities of an NHS member?

Once inducted as new members, members are expected to attend chapter meetings and participate in chapter and individual service projects (or service project alternatives during this season of virtual learning) to benefit the school and community.

Are service hours required?
If so, when are we required to complete them?

How can I best prepare for possible membership in NHS?

Students are expected to complete 30 service hours, 10 of which must be associated with NHS. The remaining 20 hours may be associated with other organizations or opportunities. See Service Opportunities & Service Requirements  and the Schoology website and current meeting slides for details.

Students should continue to do their very best to demonstrate high standards of scholarship and leadership. Maintain strong grades, participate in activities and clubs that are meaningful to you, and serve in leadership positions when possible. In addition, students should seek opportunities to serve others in our community with the primary intent of contributing to the common good. Most importantly, students should always continue to demonstrate strong character.
